Flowers aren’t meant to last forever. And that’s the beauty of it. But of course you still want to make the most of them in your vase, and there are a few key reasons they might not last as long as they could. We’re here to help you out, so let’s refresh some basics on flower care and take a look at the 5 common flower mistakes that keep your blooms from living out their full potential.
The first important step is actually before you even touch your flowers. And that’s cleaning your vase before you even fill it with water, as your vase may carry some leftover bacteria from your last bunch. Now, before you grab your trusted bottle of washing-up liquid, think again - as it needs to be cleaned off super thoroughly to ensure it doesn't leave a leftover film on your vase, which can contaminate your blooms. The best way to clean your vase is simply with a mixture of water and lemon juice, or water and some vinegar.
The most important step before you arrange is correctly prepping your flowers for the vase, or “conditioning your flowers” as it’s called in the floristry biz. If you’re being too hasty with this step and not doing it properly, you’re significantly lowering your blooms’ vase life. And that includes two key steps.
1. Snip. It’s important to trim your stems to make sure your blooms can take up water. Give the ends of your stems a clean, sharp cut at an angle - about a centimetre will do - with a pair of secateurs.
Pro Tip: Don’t even think about using your old, blunt kitchen scissors or you’ll end up squashing your stems, making water uptake harder! If you’d like to learn more about how to properly cut flower stems, check out this blog.
2. Defoliation. That refers to removing all leaves that would sit below the waterline. You can really be quite radical and take off most of the foliage - that improves airflow between your stems and avoids bacteria build up. It’s really important to have clean stems going in to avoid bacteria build-up in the water.
We all love a big, full bunch, but if you’re stuffing too many stems in your vase you’re not giving them enough airflow - and no room to breathe means your flowers will fail quicker. The key to picking the right vase is making sure it’s big enough and has got a wide enough neck. Head here for our deep dive on picking the right vase.
Pro Tip: As you recut your stems and they’re getting shorter, rearrange them in a shorter vase or dot them around your house in bud vases to help them last longer and make the most of it.
If you’re missing this step, your flowers will not have their full life - and that’s refreshing your vase water every 2-3 days (even more often when it’s hotter - read our full summer flower care tips here). As you take the stems out to refresh your vase, make sure you also give each stem another trim before you put it back in. It’s good to be on the front foot and get into a habit of doing that regularly before your water gets murky.
As much as you want to put your vase where you can see it best, a few things aside from optics should be considered when deciding where you display your flowers. Pick the coolest spot possible and make sure your flowers stay away from direct sunlight, radiators, any drafts or breezes, as well as fruit bowls - as these can all prematurely age your flowers. In the heat of summer that might be trickier, so check out our blog on summer flower care for more tips.
Pro Tip: Pop your flowers into the fridge overnight, especially during heat spells, to prolong their life.
